The Life of a Start-up Fund Manager
The Life of a Start-up Fund Manager
Yesterday morning we boarded a plane in Melbourne (14 degrees and raining) and landed in Cairns (28 degrees and raining). I went for an afternoon run, almost died thanks to the humidity, and turned up to our 6pm seminar still sweating, despite an hour's rest and two cold showers.
We only had 10 registrations so I knew it was going to be a quiet night. When only six people turned up, I was begininning to wish we'd booked a dinner table rather than a presentation room. One of the six, appoximately two years old, didn't like the first word I uttered and proceeded to voice his disdain in no uncertain terms. Two mobile phones rang in the first five minutes. I think they were both using that trick Gen Y use on a date: get a friend to call early in the night and, if the guy is a dud, pretend like something drastic has happened and you need to rush off.
Fortunately, everyone stayed and we even bolstered our numbers by 20% with one late arrival. In the end the presentation went well and we had some quality time with a few loyal Intelligent Investor members and early investors in the fund. But it will be a night we'll remember when we're, hopefully, 20 years down the track.
*I'll be back in the office next week and posting regularly again. Apologies for the hiatus.

Keep up the good fight.
You will prevail!
Really enjoyed the Port Macquarie presentation. We drove from Emerald , Qld, for the night - well really it was for another occasion and the timing was right.
Steve's info was spot on and down to earth - didn't phase Bev who is new to II - now wants to be an investor, thanks for the job well done.
Kev B.
keep up the good work Steve and don't be too disheartened, once a few points are on the board even the 'storm' will be jealous.
Enjoyed your presentation in Melbourne - liked your honesty and candidness.
Thanks for the support guys, I'm not disheartened at all. It was just a funny night and we had a great turnout in Townsville tonight.
I almost didn't make it in from the airport though. The cabbie asked me what we were here for and, when I told him we ran a managed fund, I thought he was going to kill us.
I don't think the financial services sector has come out of the Storm fiasco with much of a reputation up here.
I hate to make such a bland comparison, but even Warren Buffet's first few annual meetings had attendance in single digits. Keep up the good work.
Steve i missed the Melbourne roadshow when things get busy its easy to forget, maybe an email to all who have registed a day or two ahead would boost attendances still my fault thou, look forward to the video.
