The Top 40 Value Investing Websites and Podcasts

The Top 40 Value Investing Websites and Podcasts

The Intelligent Investor's analytical team accesses value investing information and ideas from a wide variety of sources. I’ve listed below many of the websites and podcasts that we use regularly, as you might not know them all and might find something useful amongst them. In return, Bristlemouth would love to hear about any websites or podcasts that you use or listen to regularly that we might not know about.

Earlier this month, Steve wrote a simple blog post on portfolio management software. But it was the comments provided by the Bristlemouth community that turned that post into something really useful. I’m hoping that with your help we can do something similar here.

Australian business news sources

  • The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age – these broadsheets are becoming less relevant, but we still look at them every day.
  • The Australian – has become more relevant since its tie up with The Wall Street Journal.
  • The Australian Financial Review – we generally read the hard copy, perhaps because the first crack at an online offering was so ham-fisted. But apparently it's better now. You need to subscribe for full online access.
  • We also regularly turn to The Courier-Mail and The West Australian for geographic and journalistic diversity.
  • This part of the ASX website is useful for monitoring company announcements.
  • In recent times, Business Spectator has become a valid alternative to The Australian Financial Review.
  • Yahoo Finance Australia is also useful for local news and data (such as historical prices).

Australian and international aggregators

An aggregator site pools information from far and wide.

  • We generally use wotnews to find articles on Australian companies.
  • Try Yahoo Finance or Google News when searching for the latest articles on international companies.

International news sources

Prominent value investors

  • Guru Focus is an aggregator site for information on respected value investors.
  • Berkshire Hathaway (a website which has often been down in recent months) is the source for Warren Buffett's wonderful annual letter to shareholders. We likewise never miss the annual letter to Leucadia shareholders.
  • There are many fund manager websites worth visiting, but we've highlighted the following four because of the excellent content they make available to all – GMO for the excellent research Jeremy Grantham provides, Kerr Neilson's Platinum Asset Management, Bedlam Asset Management and the research of Michael Mauboussin from Legg Mason.

I like this weekly business podcast from the NY Times: http://podcasts.nytimes.com/podcasts/2009/04/17/17weekendbiz.mp3

I also sometimes look at the following links:

1 - The deal - www.thedeal.com - Good for big financial + M&A news in the states.

2 - Yale Law School Blog - http://www.law.yale.edu/Articles&Op-eds.htm - This list of articles is written by Yale alumni and has about 1/10 articles related to the financial world (and when it does they are very good).

3 - 2+2 Investing forum - Good threads on this site are few and far between but can be good for education from time to time - http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/30/business-finance-investing.

4 - Crikey - http://www.crikey.com.au/ - Good business related content (amongst other things).

It's not really a 'value investing site' but Jim Rogers is such a character, his official site is worth a visit.

I know it's already part of one of the sites mention, but the blogs on Business Spectator can be a useful source of tidbits about various industries. http://www.businessspectator.com.au/bs.nsf/fmISBlogCentral?ReadForm

Gareth, other than the ones you have mentioned above, I also like the following:
1. Anything by Nassim Taleb. His official site is http://www.fooledbyrandomness.com
2. The annual 'World Wealth Report' by Capgemini and Merrill Lynch. Can be found at http://www.us.capgemini.com/worldwealthreport08/
3. Anything by James Montier (a member of the Soc Gen Cross Asset Research Team) who is a renowed value investor and behavioural investing guru. However, you need to be a client of SocGen to receive his regular Mind Matters newsletter however Google often provides a copy.

There are some discussion forums out there which also have a bit of value investing coverage. InvestEd is one to have a look at - http://www.invested.com.au/ ... even though it's not especially biased towards value investing, there are a few people who are interested in this approach.

The Motley Fool offers 15 minutes of light relief on investing issues, predominantly related to the US, during its podcasts that can be found at (http://fool.libsyn.com/index.php?post_category=podcasts).

If you can tolerate the angry rantings, and bypass some of the extremism, you'll find some insight in Chris Leithners newsletters. He is an independent thinker who's not afraid to speak his mind.

I'd recommend a regular visit to the ABC Background Briefing program site. Recently, there was an hour long documentary on Zombie banks and in the past it's done some good work on various shareholder activism and Gen Y and the financial crisis. http://www.abc.net.au/rn/backgroundbriefing/

On the same site and given Gareth's upcoming review of News Corp, Murdoch's Boyer Lectures offer a great insight into how his mind works and what he sees as the future of the industry.

For some pure Austrian School insight into the US economy you cant go past Peter Schiff. He has an email newsletter, frequent video blogs and a weekly radio show called Wall Street Unspun (which is available as a podcast).

http://www.europac.net/

Peter did an excellent lecture on the current
GFC at the Mises institute "Why the Meltdown Should Have Surprised No-one".

It's a very insightful and funny presentation and highly recommended.

- Leithner's latest is a good one - the rants and raves have a sound core of being right for the last few years - www.leithner.com.au
- Pimco's Bill Gross' monthly - www.pimco.com
- Grantham at GMO is top class (again, he was right for the last few years - why didn't we listen when we had no career risk! - www.gmo.com

Although you need to be an investor in one of their funds to receive these reports on daily basis, the "Bridgewater Daily Observations" are a fantastic read for global macro issues. (http://www.bwater.com/home/strategies--research/bridgewater-daily-observ...). Bridgewater is one of the more respected global macro hedge fund managers and they have virtually called the whole crisis play-by-play. Definitely insightful and well worth a read.

Full of Armageddon scenarios & exhortations to buy gold. But sometimes very funny. Maybe one for Gareth B.

He's passionate and calls it has he sees it - and anger can sometimes come with that territory, unfortunately. However, we can cherry pick his views!

I wrote a quarterly investment letter for Eidelman Capital Management on Benjamin Graham back in Q1 that your readers may find interesting. http://www.eidelmancapital.com/content/pdfs/Q109final.pdf

June 2, 2010

I wrote another quarterly letter for Eidelman Virant Capital indicating value in some small cap Japanese stocks. There are currently Ben Graham net-nets available. See http://www.eidelmanvirant.com/PDFs/Q110Final.pdf

I like the Mayne Report written by Stephen Mayne.

Nice list you have there. AFR is my personal favourite.

Although a lot of general business articles, another great one is :

There are a few good ones to follow on Twitter too:

Great thread.

Here are a few others:

http://www.gmo.com
You can register for free - access to Jeremy Grantham's macro thoughts and others (James Montier is a good read also)

http://www.marketfolly.com
Regular updates on hedge fund portfolio changes, and occasional investment newsletters (US-centric)

http://www.bengrahaminvesting.ca/Resources/videos.htm
Canadian business school website - Video interviews with mostly Canadian names although Seth Klarman and Walter Schloss ("I don't like debt! I like things cheap!" are highlights
